I’m so bad at putting things away, especially when it comes to jewellery and bobby pins. I tend to just dump them on my bedside table and then they all roll off and I lose them and then I have to buy new ones, and it’s all just a big mess. Am I the only one who has this issue? I even bought one of those fancy perspex jewellery stands to put my earrings on, but I never use it because it’s too much effort. I figure I’m better off with some sort of dish or saucer system. And here we have it: the lazy person’s jewellery organisation system.
I started with a random assortment of plain white ceramic dishes from the local kitchen store, but you can pick up stuff like this just about anywhere. I got a couple of shallow dishes and a couple of deeper ones as well.
I also had a packet of ceramic markers floating around. There are a bunch of people on Pinterest saying you can use Sharpies, but if you’re going to use Sharpies, you’ll need to get the oil based ones, which are a little harder to find. The normal ones just wash/wear off too quickly. I prefer the actual ceramic markers. I got my set from Typo, but Pebeo makes better ones.
Then it was time to start drawing on the dishes. Don’t be a scaredy-cat. Just give it a go. If you’re using ceramic markers, you can wipe them off with a damp cloth before you bake them, so don’t worry about making mistakes. When I made these, I was full up on Ventolin (which makes your hands all shaky) so there are some interesting looking lines, but once they’re all decorated, they look so cute that no one will notice, and if they do notice, they’ll just be thinking about how awesome it is you have a bunch of handmade stuff in your house and wishing they had your talent.
PRO-TIP #1: The little flower shapes are time consuming, but really easy, because they’re just dots.
Then you just need to bake the little guys according to the instructions that came with whichever markers you bought. In this case, 35 minutes at 150°C.
PRO-TIP #2: If you’re pressed for time or not feeling creative, you can always buy pre-decorated dishes, or mismatched ones from your local op-shop. It’ll still look awesome when you chuck your jewellery in them at night.
Am I the only one who just can’t be bothered to organise my jewellery and hair paraphernalia properly?
